Pulse is a news app that shows short digests of published news stories. This page explains what the Pulse app does and does not collect, in plain terms.
Pulse does not require an account, and does not ask for your name, email, phone number, or your contact or location information.
The app stores the following, only on your own device:
| Stored on your device | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Your chosen news language | So the app shows stories in the language you picked |
| Your chosen topics of interest | So the app can rank stories to your interests |
| Light/dark display setting | Remembers how you like the app to look |
| Stories you have followed | So "Saved" works, including when you are offline |
| A local cache of recent stories | So the app opens instantly and works offline |
None of the above ever leaves your device. It is not sent to us, and we cannot see it.
To show you news, the app requests the day's stories from our own server over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection — the same kind of request any news app or website makes to load content. These requests do not carry your name or any personal identifier; they carry only your selected language and topics, so the correct stories can be returned.
Story photographs are loaded directly from the original publisher, the same way a browser loads an image on a web page.
If you allow notifications, Pulse may send you a small number of important stories picked by our editors, in the news language you chose. Notifications are delivered by Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging service, which assigns your installation a random identifier so the message can reach your device. We never see or store that identifier, and it is not linked to your name or any account. You can turn notifications off at any time in your phone's settings.
Pulse uses Google Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to understand how the app is used and to fix problems. These collect:
This data is processed by Google on our behalf, is not used for advertising, and is not linked to your name, email or phone number. We do not sell it. Google's own practices are described at firebase.google.com/support/privacy.
Pulse links out to original news publishers when you tap "Read more" — once you leave the app for their site, their own privacy policy applies, not ours.
Pulse is a general-news app not directed at children, and it does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children.
If this policy changes, the update will be posted on this page with a new date at the top.
